Kindergarten Visitor

Kindergarteners celebrated Dr. Suess' birthday by wearing pajamas to school.  We read many Dr. Seuss books and did special activities.  We made Cat in the Hat hats, we drew the Cat in the Hat, we ate green eggs and ham, we counted by 10’s and 1’s using red, blue, and yellow paper fish, and we made rhyming books.  The Cat in the Hat even came for a visit!  What a great day!

North Cedar SPIRIT will guide staff and students to grow as a successful learning community.

Head Start Is Enrolling !!

Head Start is taking applications for the preschool program.  Families may contact Michelle, Family Worker, at North Cedar to inquire about the program at 553-2810.  Head Start offers fun learning experiences that will prepare children for school.  Also, it provides nutritious snacks and meals, access to a nurse and Family Worker, and parent involvement.  The program is for 3-4 year olds who live in the North Cedar School attendance area.  There is no charge for income eligible families.  Children with special needs are welcome!  To find out more about the program, call 553-2810.

Boxtops and HyVee Receipts

We truly appreciate your donations of Boxtops for Education and the HyVee receipts.  The deadline for turning in the HyVee receipts is April 30th.  They can be turned in to the office or your child can put them in the box in the media center.  Thanks for your support!

News from the Nurse’s Desk

All 6th grade students will be given a physical form this month.  Cedar Falls recommends a physical exam for all students entering grades 7 and 10.  They are required yearly for students involved in sports and cheerleading.  Contact me if you have any questions.

Please dress your children for the weather.  We can still have many cool days ahead.

With this warm weather comes many cuts and scrapes.  First aid treatments have changed in recent years.  Here are the new recommendations:

1)       Wash out cuts and scrapes with soap and water.  Apply antibiotic ointment or Vaseline and  a bandage, cleanse the area and change bandage daily.  Hydrogen peroxide is NOT recommended as it slows healing.  If a wound appears infected, it is best to soak it in warm, soapy water a couple of times a day.

2)       Nosebleeds should be controlled with the head tilted FORWARD and the nose gently pinched shut for 5 minutes. This can be repeated until the bleeding stops.  This encourages the blood to clot in the nose.  Tilting the head back causes the blood to run down the throat into the stomach causing an upset stomach.

3)       Flush a burn with cool (not cold) water.  DO NOT apply butter or Vaseline.  Soak the area for 20-30 minutes and give Tylenol or ibuprofen for the pain.

Always post emergency numbers by the phone and teach young children how to call 911 for help.

Dressing for Warmer Weather

Please remember the North Cedar dress code as the weather gets warmer, and it’s time for summer clothing!  Students are asked to wear clothing that is not distractible to others.  Please help us by making sure your child does not wear a top that is midriff length or has spaghetti straps, or a halter or tube top.  Also please be sure shorts are of appropriate length.  We ask that hats, scarves and bandanas not be worn in the building at any time.  However, students may choose to wear them at recess. Thanks for helping us make this a positive learning environment for all the students the remainder of the school year.

TO DECREASE THE NUMBER OF SNOW DAYS IN JUNE, THE STUDENTS WILL ATTEND SCHOOL ON APRIL 23,  THE DATE DESIGNATED AS STAFF DEVELOPMENT ON OUR CALENDAR.  Students last day of school will be Wednesday, June 4th, if no further snow days.
